SERVING THE PEOPLE OF DISTRICT 116

Chardale Murray is a public servant with a passion for educating our children, supporting our small businesses, and bringing new opportunities to our community.

Chardale has always called the Lowcountry home. She was born in Hollywood, South Carolina, and raised here by her parents, Lorraine and Charlie Murray, Sr. After graduating from Baptist Hill High School, she went to Talladega College – where she became a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – before coming to the University of South Carolina to earn a Master’s Degree in Social Work.

As the president and manager of Murray’s Mortuary for the last 18 years, Chardale has worked to bring comfort to families as they lay their loved ones to rest. Prior to owning and operating her small business, she worked in public education as a teacher in the Upward Bound Program. She continues to support students in the Charleston County School District by funding an annual scholarship to local schools. As faith is an important guiding force in her life, she served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Canaan Bible College.

Prior to her service in the State House, she served on Hollywood Town Council. She started an annual Veteran’s Day breakfast, donated hundreds of turkeys to seniors for Thanksgiving, and led a bicycle giveaway to children for Christmas.

In 2020, Chardale Murray was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives – making history as the first black woman to represent District 116.

During her time at the State House, she has been a strong advocate of economic growth that supports good-paying jobs, better access to affordable, high quality health care – including Medicaid expansion, improvements in local infrastructure like roads and broadband internet connectivity, strengthened trade programs and job training, and creating more affordable housing. She has filed legislation to provide income tax credits to broadband providers who give discounts to families with children who need internet access for their education and a bill to require nursing homes to assist their residents with voter registration and absentee voting.
